«MEN vs. RAY» by KETTY VAN DOLN & EDGAR LICHTNER
KETTY VAN DOLN and EDGAR LICHTNER have joined creative forces to introduce their new project “Men vs. Ray”.
Edgar Lichtner, musician, performer and director of “Scala” cultural centre in Ludwigsburg, Germany was immediately intrigued by KETTY VAN DOLN concept and philosophy. His decision to join the project results in a new authentic indie sound giving it strength and rough character.
“Men vs. Ray” is the first joint project with re-worked tracks composed and written by Ketty van Doln.
The title signifies an affinity for the époque of Modern, especially with Dada and Man Ray, one of the most prominent representatives of European Dada.
There is a wording game too: ray being considered as a light source, concept far more than just linguistic meaning. Ray as a metaphoric symbol of darkness and light, good and evil and the human indecisive nature between.
This deeply psychological questioning forms reflecting texts and music of the entire EP ”Soundtrack of a dream”, musical base of the project.
“Soundtrack of a dream” was inspired by the idea of a radical reassessment of basic values in a process of cultural migration and adaptation to a new creative home. Ketty van Doln’ personal experience as she moved to Berlin from her native Moscow play an important role too.
The idea of adaptation during and after the culture shock, in turn, is based on the theory of the Swiss psychologist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross' called five stages of dying – denial, anger, bargaining, depression and finally acceptance.
These stages again are reflected in the show concept of “Men vs.Ray”. The songs follow one another, gradually showing a particular stage period and, correspondingly, the times of shock and subsequent adaptation Ketty to Berlin, and perhaps Berlin to Ketty.
The theatrical emphasize accompanying the show complete mystery of the song performed in English, French, Russian and Georgian. Stage design that incorporates multimedia elements resembles a surreal blockbuster movie set.
«Men vs. Ray » is close to electro-punk. It is conceived as a fusion between the hard melancholy of a post-punk and fatal mystery of electronic music and its synthetically created characters. The sound has been produced using multitimbral mikrokorga and with the help of various analog sound carriers.
